Sir Roderick Deane KNZM

Chairman and Independent Trustee

Sir Roderick Deane has had extensive interests in both the business world and public policy, as well as in the fields of disability and the arts. He is, with his wife Gillian, Joint Patron of IHC NZ and Chairman of the IHC Foundation. He is a past National President of IHC and a Life Member of IHC.

Sir Roderick and Lady Deane, are Trustees of the Deane Endowment Trust which assists people with disabilities and rare disorders; talented young people in the arts, music and science; a range of music, opera and ballet organizations; and a number of art galleries, museums and research organizations.

Sir Roderick has previously been Chairman of Fletcher Building Ltd, ANZ National Bank, Telecom Corporation of NZ Ltd, the NZ Seed Fund, Pacific Road Group (in Sydney), Te Papa Tongarewa (The Museum of NZ), and City Gallery Wellington Foundation; a Director of Woolworths Limited in Sydney, ANZ Banking Group Ltd in Melbourne, and TransAlta Corporation in Canada; and Professor of Economics and Management at Victoria University of Wellington.

He was earlier Chairman of the State Services Commission, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of NZ, and Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC.

He has a PhD, BCom (Hons), FACA, FCIS, FNZIM and an Honorary LLD from Victoria University of Wellington. In 2012 he was honoured with a knighthood.

Paul

Paul Baines

Independent Trustee

Paul Baines was a partner of share brokers and investment bankers Jarden & Co and an executive of Credit Suisse First Boston NZ (now First NZ Capital) for over 20 years until the early 1990’s. He held leadership positions in research and investment banking and was CEO from 1987 to 1993.

Over the last 20 years Paul has held a range of governance positions. He is currently a director of Todd Corporation and Todd Family Office (Chair), and is on the Board of Chamber Music New Zealand, New Zealand Institute of Economic Research and the New Zealand Treasury. He is Chair of the Gillies McIndoe Foundation and the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute.

Previous governance roles include Board membership of Barnardos (Chair), Comalco NZ, Databank, EDS NZ, Enterprise NZ Trust (Chair), Fletcher Building, Fletcher Challenge, Gough Gough and Hamer, New Zealand Post, Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Telecom, Tower Funds Management (Chair), Wrightson, and Queen Margaret College.

Tony

Tony Shaw

Independent Trustee

Tony has been involved in the disability sector for over 30 years. For many years he was a committee member and Chair of the Timaru branch of IHC. He then served on various national committees and was an inaugural member of the IHC Board of Governance. He was a New Zealand vice president for four years and then served three years as president of IHC New Zealand Inc. For a period he chaired the Donald Beasley Institute.

Tony is the managing partner of the Timaru law firm Timpany Walton. He has considerable experience in litigation but in recent years has increasingly focused on commercial work and commercial dispute resolution. He also works in the areas of employment law and complex relationship property disputes. He has served on the Canterbury District Law Society.

Tony is a director of New Zealand’s largest privately owned passenger transport business. He is currently Chair of the South Island Masters Games.

Tony is married with three children.

IHC appointed Trustee

Donald became involved with IHC over 20 years ago with the birth of his daughter. He has held voluntary roles as President of the North Otago Branch and has been a member of the IHC Board for Board for fifteen years, nine of which have been as Chair of the Board and President of the Society.

 

Ralph-Jones

Ralph Jones

IHC appointed Trustee

Ralph Jones is presently IHC’s Chief Executive and has over 25 years’ experience in the health and disability sector. He has also held the positions of IHC’s General Manager Corporate Services and General Manager Northern Region.

Ralph is a Chartered Accountant and prior to joining IHC worked primarily in the commercial sector for organisations such as BP Oil. Ralph also worked for Ernst & Young where he initially gained his experience in the disability sector in the late 1980s during the period of deinstitutionalisation.

Ralph also holds international Directorships including Inclusion International and Workability International and is a Trustee of the Donald Beasley Institute.

 

Jan

Jan Dowland

Executive Director

Jan Dowland has worked in the health and disability sector for over 40 years in research, policy, management and consultancy roles. She was Chief Executive of IHC NZ Inc for four years following four years as general manager of the central region.

Jan has had a number of government appointments. She was appointed Chair of the Mental Health Commission in 2002 and in 2005 was appointed as a panel member to the Confidential Forum for Former Inpatients of Psychiatric Hospitals. Currently Jan is Chair of the Wellington Community Trust.

She remains involved with the intellectual disability and mental health sectors through both her paid and voluntary work.
